SATURDAY COMMUNITY CONVERSATION SERIES
On four Saturdays during the run of RACE: Are We So Different? ECHO will open its doors for $2 per person for community conversations about race, including workshops, films, performances and a guided discussion of race in our community. Admission includes access to all of the day's special events, viewing of the RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition, and ECHO's permanent exhibits. While at ECHO, share your perspective about race in our community collage photo kiosk.
October 6, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Opening Celebration Let's Talk About Race! $2 admission all day.
Join us for a day of performance, film and workshops to support conversations about race. The day will include local poet and hip hop artist Rajnii Eddins and a guided conversation about talking about race in our homes, schools, workplaces and public spaces, hosted by UVM professor Emily Barnard. $2 admission all day!

November 10, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Burlington's Changing Community. $2 admission all day.
This daylong event will focus on Burlington's changing community, including a conversation about the relationship between changes in Burlington’s demographics and the community’s neighborhoods, urban planning, social services, and business infrastructure.

December 1, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Is Race Real? $2 admission all day.
This daylong event will include local drumming and dance group Africa Jamono and a discussion and debate about the existence of “race” from various disciplinary perspectives. The central question of the debate, “Is race real?” will be further unpacked by scholars of race who will explore the implications of the scientific deconstruction of race and the power of the social construction of race and lead visitors in a discussion of this thorny question.

Jan 12, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Race & Identity. $2 admission all day.
This daylong event will focus on experiences with race and identity. Programs include a special performance by the African hip hop trio A2VT which means “Africa to Vermont,” as well as a panel discussion about Asian American Identity, focused on the complex dynamics of race relationships shaped by Asian Americans, which are often invisible in today's conversations about race. The day will conclude with original films, and conversations with filmmakers, about Native American Identity and Culture in Vermont.

CAFÉ SCIENTIFIQUE RACE SERIES
ECHO’s Café Scientifique provides a unique, relaxing setting to engage in thoughtful conversations about hot button science topics, with the participation of an acknowledged expert in each field. Free light hors d'oeuvres and cash bar. An ECHO Afterdark event for the 21+ crowd. Suggested donation $5. Refreshments provided by Vermont Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.
Nov 8, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.: Race & Environmental Justice: Bridging the Gap Between Us
How do our social connections to people different from ourselves affect our attitudes towards environmental issues? Tom Macias, Associate Professor of Sociology at UVM will lead us in conversation.

Jan 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m.: Scientific Construction of Race
This evening's presentation will focus on The Anthropological & the Biological Construction of Race with Mike Lange, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Champlain College and John Burke, Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, University of Vermont.

Every Friday (16 successive) beginning October 12 at 11 a.m. ECHO is proud to join forces with Reading to End Racism, an all-volunteer community-based initiative supporting children and families across Vermont and the United States to develop awareness and skills for countering racism and building connections among people of diverse backgrounds. The program uses literature and personal stories to create a welcoming environment to engage children and families in conversations about race and racism in the United States. Preschoolers and their adults are welcome to come and talk about race! |
